Purchasing abroad and unexpected taxes

No, not the good looking variety, but thanks for coming out to word play.
And I value site supporters like Bud and seek to purchase in kind when possible.
However, I just encountered previously never experienced tax and customs handling fees for a delivery to Canada from Motobins in the UK.
Are others noting this to be a recent shift in policy up here for us Canukistanians?
As well, I could ship from M.B. to a US drop box address, anyone chosen that strategy? ( & I live very close to...

CLEANING an oil filter!!!! Are you kidding me????

I was HORRIFIED with a text 'conversation' I had with my local Yamaha dealer this morning. It goes like this........
I sent a message to the manager of the dealership informing them that the next morning I would be bringing my new Yamaha XMAX 300 in for it's first service. According to the service book this is schedules between 500 and 1500km. No problem so far: they replied saying they had informed the service bay and were expecting me. There was some damage to a few body panels (caused by...

Endorsitan 4X tank bag

Ok folks.

Just as the title suggests, I'm in the market for a 4X tank bag or similar size and waterproof. I believe from what I've found that my options are limited with a small waterproof bag for a 501.

Peace and thanks for reading.

Oil question

I changed my oil yesterday, 3,815 miles, 1st service done at 620 of course. Screens and magnets were spotless which was nice to see. The oil was really quite dark however - normal or not? Just makes me wonder about 9k intervals...

Stupid questions people ask you when stopped

I believe we're all used with being asked how fast is the bike and how many mpg does it get. But have you ever been asked something that simply blew your mind?

I'll start with mine. The advantage of riding in remote places of an almost non-biking country.

- "Sir, is that a real BMW or it's just the badge?" (people here are used with chinese replicas, therefore the question is almost a legitimate one; asked 3 times already, waiting for more)
- "Duuuuude, does your bike has two...

Minnesota Trails / Camping

Hi all,

Family recently moved to Minnesota (Twin Cities area - St Paul locale) in August. I have an ‘81 Honda XL185s dual sport I would like to take to some trails to camp. Bike is plated and DNR tagged for MN. I will haul the bike on my hitch rack to a trailhead area then ride and camp.

Does anyone know of some good quality trails with ‘safe’ primitive camp sites along the trial? Fishing access would be a plus. I would be open to a sub-two hour drive to get to a trail.

Thanks for...

I have a new Pirelli Scorp Rear just rec’d. Born on date 2 yrs ago

I dont know about you all but I check the mfg date of my tires. I run Scorp org equip on my 950 because they work well in the sand and good on the road.
Probably my 4 th rear.
So i get it in and its 2 years old. I live in Flatistan aka Florida so dryrot is a real deal here and after about 4 years tires are dry rotted abd rock hard.
So I call Motosport and they say return it but the next one we send you might be old too. There is no mfg limit given to say its too old to sell.
It looks...

Rear ended at controlled left turn.

Minding my business on the way home from work. One mile odd from home, light is red, and I have to turn left. It turns green, but not for the controlled left. I wait. I'm the only one waiting to turn left, in the right of two left turn lanes.

It turns green, and before I even have an opportunity to turn the throttle I get rear ended. I wear ear plugs, but didn't hear anything (brakes/ tires screeching) until I felt the impact. The first sensation was of my bike shooting out from under...

Best Thumper to do the Trans-America Trail on?

After reading a bunch of Trans-America Trail ride reports, I am thinking of gearing up to try and do it late next year. I'm between bikes right now (only have a CRF230F play bike left) so I'll need to get a new bike and start preparing it.

So, what thumper would you choose for a TAT ride? I'm leaning towards an XR650L... really like the air cooling and simplicity of the bike, and I imagine its pretty much bulletproof since the bike hasn't changed in years.

So, if you were going to do the...

Requesting comments about kickstarter holder.

A local long time BMW airhead tech is refurbishing my 5 spd transmission on my 74 R90S.
Asking about P/N 23 51 1 231 673, kickstarter holder.
Wondering who might be able to comment on the

stiffness of the rotating 'sprocket'.
The original was stiff and thinking it may be abnormal I ordered a new one from Max's BMW.
New one is just as stiff. I'll try to add a photo here that we took with a 6in Visa grip plier held on the sprocket:...

Garage Heater

Have a 24x30 garage. I live in NW Pennsylvania. I have R19 in the walls and R39 in the ceiling. Been trying to make a decision on a heater but keep finding reasons to keep looking. Wanted to get some feedback from people here who heat their garages. Had a full 220v heater from Northern Tool but it was killer on the Electric bill. Pellet stoves aren't bad but I don't want to take up the floor space / corner. I was thinking of going with propane but again, you got the extra expense of...

Europe Fall 2019 suggestions?

This has been asked before I'm sure, but I thought I'd start my own post

This fall I may have opportunity to ride in Europe. It would be my one and only trip as financially I can't afford to do it twice. This would be with a tour company as I want this to be stress free.

All the areas look exciting, but if you could only go once, what area would you go? My preference would be for southern Europe as I'm hoping for warmer, sunnier weather.

I've added a poll to make it easy, if the area...

R1200GSw LC Wethead Final Drive change and Spline Lube Pictorial!

While not part of the BMW Service Schedule, it is a good idea to do this at the 6 or 12 K service. This is especially true if you do a lot of deep water crossings, ride in the rain often, or just put on a lot of miles. There have been cases of corrosion in the FD on several bikes, though not a large number by percentage, and even a failure of the FD splines on one bike due to corrosion. So, with that in mind, I decided to check a 14K mile and 6K mile GSw today. Here are the results, and...
